Understanding WCAG Contrast Requirements

What is contrast ratio?

Contrast ratio measures the difference in perceived brightness between two colors. A ratio of 1:1 means identical colors, while 21:1 is the maximum (black on white). Higher ratios are easier to read.

Why does font size matter?

Larger text is inherently easier to read, so WCAG allows a lower contrast threshold. Text at 24px or larger (or 18.66px+ when bold) only needs a 3:1 ratio for AA compliance instead of 4.5:1.

AA vs AAA compliance

WCAG AA is the minimum standard required by most accessibility laws. AAA is stricter and recommended for optimal readability. Most legal requirements reference AA.

How are suggestions generated?

We adjust your text color in the OKLCH color space, which is perceptually uniform. This means small adjustments produce visually proportional changes, keeping the suggested color as close to your original as possible.
